July 31, 2026 (Khartoum, Sudan): The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), H.E. Dr Workneh Gebeyehu, has concluded a high-level official mission to the Republic of Sudan, reaffirming IGAD’s unwavering commitment to supporting the Government and people of Sudan in their pursuit of lasting peace, stability, and recovery.
The mission marks a significant milestone in the renewed partnership between IGAD and Sudan following the country’s resumption of full participation in the Organisation earlier this year. It also underscores IGAD’s continued engagement in advancing regional peace, dialogue, and cooperation through a Sudanese-led and Sudanese-owned process.
During the visit, the Executive Secretary held high-level consultations with H.E. General Abdel Fattah Al Burhan, Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council of the Republic of Sudan, and H.E. Dr Kamil Idris, Prime Minister of the Republic of Sudan. Discussions focused on the current situation in Sudan, the urgent need to advance sustainable peace, support post-conflict recovery, strengthen national institutions, and improve the humanitarian situation.
Throughout the engagements, the Executive Secretary reiterated that lasting peace in Sudan can only be achieved through an inclusive, Sudanese-led process that reflects the aspirations of the Sudanese people. He reaffirmed IGAD’s readiness to continue accompanying Sudan through dialogue, regional solidarity, technical cooperation, and sustained diplomatic engagement.
“The future of Sudan belongs to the Sudanese people. IGAD remains committed to supporting their efforts towards dialogue, peace, and recovery,” the Executive Secretary stated during the visit.
A key milestone of the mission was the official re-opening of the IGAD Mission to the Republic of Sudan in Khartoum. The Mission will serve as a renewed platform for engagement between IGAD, the Government, and the people of Sudan, facilitating dialogue, strengthening partnerships, supporting programme implementation, and enhancing coordination with regional and international partners.
The re-opening of the Mission reflects IGAD’s long-term commitment to Sudan and reinforces the Organisation’s belief that sustained on-the-ground engagement is essential to supporting peacebuilding, institutional recovery, and regional cooperation.
The Executive Secretary further underscored that peace in Sudan remains fundamental to the stability and prosperity of the Horn of Africa and the wider region. As a founding Member State of IGAD and a strategic bridge between Africa and the Middle East, Sudan’s recovery is inseparable from the region’s collective aspirations for peace, security, regional integration, and sustainable development.
IGAD commends the continued engagement of the Government of the Republic of Sudan and reaffirms its commitment to working closely with the Sudanese authorities, Member States, the African Union, the United Nations, and other international partners in support of a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Sudan.
