The 24th Meeting of IGAD Committee of Ambassadors convened today in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In this one day meeting, the ambassadors discuss the administration matters of IGAD Secretariat as well as the current political events of the region.
Executive Secretary of IGAD, Eng. Mahboub Maalim, received H.E. Ambassador Francis Zaza Simenda, the ambassador and permanent representative to the African Union and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.The ambassador is also Zambia's Permanent Secretary to IGAD.
Executive Secretary praised Zambia for its support to IGAD. The two officials had a broad discussion about the region and called for stronger relationship and cooperation.
For his part, the Zambian ambassador Simenda thanked the Executive Secretary for his gracious hospitality in welcoming him to Djibouti.
As part of the growing Turkish engagement in the IGAD Region, particularly in Somalia, the Executive Secretary of IGAD H.E. Engineer Mahboub Maalim was invited to Turkey for joint consultative meetings on possible areas of cooperation.
The Executive Secretary of IGAD, Engineer Mahboub Maalim on March 2nd 2012 met with the German Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Mr. Dirk Niebel, at the Ministry Headquarters in Berlin City. The Minister reiterated the strategic importance of IGAD in coordinating efforts to develop and build resilience against future drought disasters in the Horn of Africa. Mr. Niebel reconfirmed German’s offer of Euro 20 million in support of efforts towards ending drought emergencies in the Horn and Euro 3 million for capacity building of IGAD.
The judgement by Justice Ombija issuing an order of arrest against President AI Bashir of Sudan has been subject of contestation for several months
It's evident from reading the judgement that the judge erred in law: the judge was wrong to issue the order. To summarise Judge Ombija's decision, he says that Kenya has an obligation to arrest AI Bashir because we ratified the Rome Statute, passed a law domesticating it and have in any case a Constitution that applies every treaty ratified by Kenya as part of our law.
