March 24, 2021 (MOMBASA, Kenya): Ambassadors from the Inter-Governmental Member States accredited to IGAD Secretariat today endorsed the new IGAD strategy and the proposed budget for the running of the Secretariat.
The three- day meeting in Mombasa deliberated on the proposed budget and strategy which is consistent with Article 7 of the Agreement Establishing Intergovernmental, Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the goal of the IGAD Strategy 2021-2025 is anchored on building transformative regional capacities for sustainable development, resilience, stability, accelerating regional integration and cross border cooperation among the Member States.
IGAD’s development agenda will be globally articulated through its anticipated Vision 2050 to be aligned with AU Agenda 2063, SDGs and other international treaties and conventions. At the operational level, the strategy will be implemented through annual operational plans containing IGAD priority interventions that have taken into account Member State aspirations.
The adopted budget is for the running of the programmes of all IGAD Divisions, Specialised Offices, and Offices of the Special Envoys for Somalia and South Sudan.
Both the strategy and the budget are aimed at institutional strengthening of IGAD to maintain its central role in promoting regional cooperation to overcome challenges and accelerating regional integration.
