24 February 2021 (KAMPALA, Uganda): The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Dr Workneh Gebeyehu, yesterday was received by the President of the Republic of Uganda, H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, at State House in Entebbe.
The Executive Secretary thanked President Museveni for the warm welcome he was accorded along with his delegation The Executive Secretary and the President shared thoughts on issues pertaining to regional peace, economic integration, and response to the COVID-19 pandemic. They agreed to a more coordinated and enhanced approach to dealing with these important issues.
Before meeting with the President the same day, Dr Workneh convened with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uganda, H.E. Sam Kutesa, in Kampala. They said their mutual pleasure of the official mission of the serving Executive Secretary to Uganda. Further discussions reviewed the peace and security situation in the IGAD region. The interlocutors mutually agreed that the input of President Museveni would be valuable to addressing these situations.
The Executive Secretary and the Minister of Foreign Affairs further discussed on the best way forward of efficiently executing the routine business and continuing to effectively deliver on the mandate of IGAD under COVID-19 restrictions. They agreed on maximising on the utilisation of technological platforms to enhance inter-state contact, consultations and consensus.
Dr Workneh this afternoon took the opportunity of his official mission to Uganda to preside over the handover ceremony of ambulances and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the Minister of Health of Uganda, Hon. Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero, in the presence of the Head of the European Delegation in Uganda, Ambassador Attilio Pacifici, and the United Nations Resident Coordinator, Mrs. Rosa Malango. The equipment is destined to serve at the cross-border areas of Busia, Malaba, Elegu and Adjumani refugee camp.
In the morning, the Executive Secretary had inaugurated a Workshop on Training in Strategic Communications organised in Entebbe by the IGAD Centre of Excellence for Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (ICEPCVE).
