Nov. 21, 2019 (DJIBOUTI, Djibouti): The Secretary General of the United Nations, H.E. Antonio Guterres, sent a congratulatory message to the Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu.
In his statement the Secretary General welcomed the acceptance of Dr. Gebeyehu of the decision from the IGAD Heads of State and government to lead the regional body as its Executive Secretary.
“I would like to express my warmest congratulations to you on this achievement and look forward to working closely with you in strengthening the cooperation between the United Nations and IGAD at a time when the region is undergoing significant developments, both politically and economically”, said the Secretary General in his letter to H.E. Dr Workneh Gebeyehu.
Similarly, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, H.E. Mr Sergey Lavrov, sent his congratulations to the new Executive Secretary to whom responsibility for the regional organisation’s Secretariat was handed over on Nov. 7 this year.
In his message, Mr Lavrov expressed his conviction that IGAD ‘will continue its efforts to facilitate settling major conflicts and overcoming security issues in the region as well as promoting important economic projects for the benefit of the nations of the Horn of Africa States in the interests of peace and stability on the continent’ under Dr Gebeyehu’s leadership.
