IGAD Region Blue Economy Opportunities in Inland Waterways Transport : The Case Study of South Sudan

In the history of human civilization, transportation evolving from simple foot travel to advanced global networks has been a fundamental and powerful instrument for sociological and techno-logical growth. Many modes of transport have evolved and many more have gone extinct. The modes of transportation have developed alongside the expansion of human understanding and culture. Our greatest demands and challenges have, in turn, initiated our greatest inventive feats that have taken us from where we have come to where we intend to go. The transporting of goods and passengers by water is described as the backbone of global trade. Water transport is responsible for the transport of the majority of raw materials, components, and finished products that drive the economy. Water transport is efficient and relatively low-cost, which permits the import and export of goods and supports the livelihoods of billions of people. In the 21st century, globally, water transport is responsible for about 80% of the world trade volume and about 70% of trade value.
