The final DRAFT of the IGAD Integrated Maritime Safety and Security Strategy (2030) [IMSSS] and an associated Action Plan has been completed.

The Director of the ISSP Cmdr. Abebe stated that the strategy underlined the dedication of the ISSP Maritime Pillar team to assist IGAD member states to respond to maritime threats and incident.

Port Sudan, 5 December 2014 – IGAD Security Sector Program (ISSP) held a four days validation workshop of the regional baseline assessment study report on the vulnerabilities and threats of TOC in the IGAD region held on 1-4 December 2014 in Port Sudan, Republic of Sudan.  The Pillar Head of the Transnational Organized Crime at ISSP, Commander Tuemay Aregawi, chaired the meeting.

The primary objective of the validation workshop was to review, evaluate, critique, improve and validate the findings and suggested recommendations of the comprehensive regional assessment study draft reports on the vulnerabilities and threats of TOC in the IGAD Region.  The study was believed to bridge the critical gap of data and knowledge about the scale, extent, causes, impact and trends of TOC in the sub-region in general. ISSP considers the findings of the assessment study and the feedback of the validation workshop as important venue to enhance common understanding of the vulnerabilities and threats of TOC and as vital input to formulate sub-regional common security policy framework to counter transnational organized crime.

Based on the recently completed Maritime Security Training Manual and Programme; IGAD Maritime Pillar of the Security Sector Programme, organised and delivered a productive course on Maritime Domain Awareness and Intelligence [MDA-I] which took place at the IGAD headquarters in Djibouti from Dec 01 – Dec 03 2014.

An IGAD training workshop on Election Observation organized by the Political Affairs Program under the Peace and Security Division kicked off on 24 November 2014 in Bishoftu, Ethiopia.

The training workshop scheduled to be conducted from 24-26 November 2014, is organized for participants from the electoral bodies of the Republic of Sudan and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia; IGAD Member States that are to conduct elections in April and May 2015 respectively.

The objective of the workshop is to contribute towards strengthening the institutional capacity of the electoral bodies of the two Member States to discharge the heavy responsibilities they are entrusted with i.e. organizing and conducting national elections of their respective countries.

An IGAD training workshop on Democracy and Governance organized by the Political Affairs Program under the Peace and Security Division in collaboration with the Political Affairs Department of the African Union Commission kicked off on 13 November 2014 in Nairobi, Kenya.

The training workshop was organized for Parliamentarians of IGAD member States. As IGAD is gender sensitive organization, separate invitation was extended to the Gender Affairs Committees in the respective National Parliaments to ensure their participation.

The workshop was officially opened by Hon. Jakoyo Midiwo Representative of National Parliament of the Republic of Kenya. Opening remarks were delivered by Ambassador Mahboub Maalim, IGAD Executive Secretary, and by the representative of the AFRICAN Union Commission, Mr. Mbari Calixte Aristide.
