Kampala, January 15, 2015: IGAD Inland Water Resources Management Programme (INWRMP) and the School of Law of Makerere University (Kampala, Uganda) today closed a three-day workshop on International Water Law meant for IGAD Member States officials active in water management within concerned ministries in their home countries.

Dr Emmanuel Kasimbazi, Course Coordinator and Chair of the Environmental Law Centre/School of Law/Makerere University, presided over the handing over of certificates ceremony in the premises of the School of Law this morning. On day one of the training where a brief opening ceremony was held, Dr Kasimbazi, on behalf of the Dean of the School of Law, Dr Damalie Naggita Musoke, had expressed her pleasure to have IGAD as a partner to facilitate the training course which was aimed “at providing officials from IGAD member states with exposure to topics of international water law relevant within IGAD regional context, so as to enhance their capacity to handle water resources management issues and negotiate solutions”.

Nairobi, 8 December 2014 – The IGAD Inland Water Resources Management Program has convened the 1st Water Dialogue Forum and Expo at the Kenyatta International Conference Center (KICC) in Nairobi, Kenya. The three-day event that commenced this morning, was officially opened by the Cabinet secretary of Environment, Water and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kenya, Prof. Judy Wakhungu who also launched the Expo being held in the same premises.

Other dignitaries present included the IGAD Executive Secretary Ambassador Mahboub Maalim and Representative of the United Nations Mr. Mohamed Khalid. The dignitaries joined close to 500 delegates who represent the water sector in seven IGAD Member States.

Soroti, Uganda, 17-11-2014: The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in collaboration with the Ugandan Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE) this morning inaugurated a five-day national training workshop on rainwater harvesting and catchment area development for Karamoja region under the leadership of Dr. Callist Tindimugaya, Commissioner Water Resources Planning and Regulation at the MWE, and Mr. Henk Gijselhart, Capacity Building Expert from the Technical Assistance  to IGAD for the implementation of the Inland Water Resources Management Programme (INWRMP), in Soroti, Uganda .

Djibouti, 20-10-2014: The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), in partnership with the Djibouti Ministry of Agriculture, Water, Fisheries, and Livestock, today organized a dissemination workshop on the potential of the technologies for collecting surface water
at Acacia Hotel-Djibouti. This workshop was inaugurated by Mr. Mohamed Moussa, Director of IGAD Agriculture and Environment Division in his capacity as Official in Charge of IGAD, along with Mr. Ismael Elmi, Technical Advisor to the Djibouti Minister of Agriculture, with facilitation from Mr. Daher Elmi, Programme Manager Natural Resources-IGAD in charge of the Inland Water Resources Management Program (INWRMP).

The workshop was organized within the framework of the Inland Water Resources Management Program (INWRMP) which is funded by the European Union and implemented by IGAD. It focused on the dissemination of a work of reflection led by specialists from various backgrounds on rainwater harvesting in the Republic of Djibouti.

Nairobi, 06-10-2014: The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) brought financial support to the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) for their 4th Nile Basin Development Forum held in Nairobi on October 06-07, 2014, while giving all IGAD member states officials, whether part of the NBI or not, the opportunity to attend the Forum in preparation of the First IGAD Forum on Water set for early December this year in Nairobi.

The official opening ceremony was presided over by Prof. Judi W. Wakhungu, Cabinet Secretary-Ministry of Environment, Water, and Natural Resources (MEWNR) of Kenya with facilitation from Mr. John R. Nyaoro, NBI Executive Director, who thanked IGAD for contributing to “making this happen” along with other sponsors. Key note addresses were given by ministerial level officials from Tanzania, Sudan, and from high level personalities from World Bank, and a U.S. water management Centre (CADWES).
