(IGAD – Djibouti) The Executive Secretary of IGAD H.E Ambassador (Eng) Mahboub M. Maalim has expressed profound concern regarding the current situation in South Sudan where on the 15th of December there was an outbreak of violence in some parts of the capital city, Juba which later spread to other parts of the country.
Ambassador Maalim stated that IGAD finds the situation particularly worrisome as it is already having wide-spread impact on the civilian population.
The Executive Secretary calls upon the Government of the Republic of South Sudan and all concerned parties to exercise maximum restraint to avert further escalation. He also urges all parties to engage in dialogue and seek a peaceful solution to the situation.
The Executive Secretary wishes to reassure the people and the Government of the Republic of South Sudan its full support towards reaching a peaceful solution.
