Djibouti, 01 February 2011 – The IGAD Executive Secretary Engineer Mahboub Maalim made the announcement during a courtesy call made to his offices by the IOM Director General Ambassador William Lacy Swing and IOM Senior Officials.
“We will wish to continue our level of cooperation in the area of migration especially by ensuring the continuation and sustainability of the IGAD Regional Consultative Process (IGAD-RCP). IOM has been very supportive in our efforts to address issues related to migration management in the region by providing technical support,” IGAD Executive Secretary said.
The IOM Director General said that he understood the importance of the relationship that exists between IGAD and IOM and agreed to continue working with IGAD in strengthening the existing partnership.
“We are eager to learn about IGAD’s plans for the future, and I am sure we will be supportive of your efforts. There are many challenges and opportunities that come with migration that we can cooperate in addressing,” the Director General remarked.
The Executive Secretary and the Director General also discussed issues relating to migration such as environmental stability, gender equality, education, HIV/AIDs and human rights that cut across all programs of IGAD.
