May 06, 2021 (DJIBOUTI, Djibouti) The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) welcomes the restoration of diplomatic relations between its two sisterly member states of Kenya and Somalia and commends the presidents of the two countries for their statesmanship.
IGAD hopes that the agreement will not only improve relations between the two sisterly neighbouring countries but also contribute to the promotion of security, stability and development in the wider Horn of Africa region.
IGAD has been tirelessly encouraging the two countries to put aside their differences and brought both President Uhuru Kenyatta and President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo to a face-to-face meeting at a Summit of Heads of States and Government in Djibouti in December 2020.
H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, the Executive Secretary of IGAD welcomed the resumption of the ties and said it signified a step forward in realisation of the goal of integration of IGAD countries and reiterated his full support and solidarity with the people of Kenya and Somalia.
