December 26, 2014 – Djibouti: The Intergovernmental Authority on Development welcomed the Parliamentary endorsement of Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke as the new Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

 

Following the reported dispute between the former Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed and the Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the subsequent decision of the Somali Parliament on December 6th, 2014, Somalia took an important and speedy measure to appoint a new Premier.

The IGAD Executive Secretary H.E Amb(Eng.) Mahboub Maalim, while sending his  warm congratulations  to the  President of  the Federal Republic of Somalia and the Speaker of Parliament, he emphasized on the need to stand together  in the midst of the continues threats of  Al-Shabaab, against the stabilization efforts . Joining hands and hearts is very critical to sustain the political gains achieved and to keep the impetus for further peace building and political transformation of the country.

Appreciating the sustained efforts that have been resulting in the contentious displacement of Al-Shabaab and the re-building of the administrative structures in the re-covered areas, the Executive Secretary, reaffirmed the commitment of IGAD to step up its contribution to the peace building process on the basis of its comparative advantage that has been built through years of experiences of working in Somalia.    ###
