IGAD EXECUTIVE SECRETARY CONGRATULATES PEOPLE OF SUDAN, WELCOMES APPOINTMENT OF H.E. ABDALLAH HAMDOCK AS PRIME MINISTER

Addis Ababa, 21 August 2019: The Executive Secretary of IGAD Amb (Eng.) Mahboub Maalim sent a message of congratulations to the people of Sudan on the historic signing of the power sharing constitutional decree on 17 August 2019 in Khartoum. He also warmly welcomed the appointment of H.E. Abdallah Hamdock as Prime Minister of the Transitional Government of Sudan. 

Amb. Maalim described the signing of the deal as a historical achievement signaling a new dawn for the people of Sudan. He stated that IGAD is fully committed to engaging with and supporting Prime Minister Hamdock and transitional governing institutions towards a full realization of peace, reconciliation and democratic transition in Sudan. 

He also expressed his appreciation for the Chairperson of the African Union Commission H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat and the Prime Minister of Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia Dr. Abiy Ahmed who is the current Chairperson of IGAD as well as their respective envoys. He said it was their tireless efforts in leading months of negotiations that bore fruit. 

He called on the international community to rally behind the transitional leadership of Sudan and support the country’s economic recovery as well as peace, reconciliation and democratic transition efforts. END
