Djibouti, June 15th 2015 – The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) are launching today a project to support the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Program (CAADP) process in the sub-region. The project launching will take place at the Institute of Diplomatic Studies of Djibouti and it will involve two days of technical discussions among the representatives of the stakeholders.
During the workshop, participants will review and validate project activities and the related work plan to ensure the IGAD CAADP Regional Investment Plan is comprehensive, addresses emerging regional agricultural development, food security and nutrition challenges. In particular, stakeholders will discuss the priority areas for investment and align them with current national, regional and continental developments, such as the Malabo Declaration and IGAD’s own initiatives.
The expected outputs of the workshop include a revised project work plan and timeline, with a clear project implementation strategy that guarantees effective consultation and coordination mechanisms to ensure synergy and complementarity between the RIP and other regional food security and agricultural development programs and strategies. In addition, the workshop will serve to renew the collaboration between IGAD, on one hand, and the continental institutions (AUC and NPCA) and bilateral and multilateral development partners, on the other.
The IGAD Secretariat has requested FAO’s assistance in formulating a Regional Investment Plan within the African Agriculture Development Program initiated by the African Union, and on the basis of which a CAADP Compact will be prepared, aiming at supporting and completing the efforts undertaken for food security and agriculture development at a national level. ###
