18-10-2018, Nairobi (Kenya): Ministers of Agriculture and Ministers of Land Management from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Member States this morning adopted the IGAD Land Governance Strategy in Nairobi.
Hon. Parsis Namuganza Princess-Minister of State of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, and Hon, Vincent Banmulangaki Sempijja-Minister of Agriculture, Animal, Industry and Fisheries represented Uganda.
Hon. Alfred Ladu Gore-Minister of lands Housing and Urban Development, and Hon. Onyoti Adigo Nykee-Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, represented South Sudan.
HE Abou Gabir Saeed-State Minister, Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Physical Development represented Sudan.
HE Said Hussein Eid-Minister of Agriculture and Food Security represented Somalia.
The meeting was officially inaugurated by the Guest of Honour, Hon. Gideon Mung’aro-Chief Administrative Secretary at the Ministry of Lands and Physical Planning of Kenya, with the IGAD Executive Secretary at the high table.
The Ministerial Meeting endorsed two strategies developed by IGAD Secretariat with the participation of its Member States. These Strategy documents are:
- The IGAD Region Land Governance Strategy;
- Mainstreaming Land Governance in the Programs of IGAD and those of its Member.
The endorsement of these strategy documents will enable IGAD Secretariat provide the necessary support to the Member States in mainstreaming Land Governance and implementing regional land governance projects in a bid to support the implementation of the AU Declaration on Land Issues and Challenges in Africa.

Background
IGAD is currently implementing a project with support of the African Union Land Policy Initiative with funding from the UN Economic Commission for Africa and the Swiss Development Agency (SDC) to mainstream land governance in IGAD’s programs (proposed to last for six years, in two phases of three years each) that will greatly enhance the implementation of IGADs regional strategy. The project is aimed at helping IGAD and its member states to address the various land policy and governance issues and constraints.
