Non-compliance with world animal and plant health and food safety standards is deemed as a major barrier to accessing international agricultural trade and thereby denying countries the exploitation of the competitive advantage of their locally produced commodities, thus missing out on the potential benefits. The IGAD Centre for Pastoral Areas and Livestock Development (ICPALD), in collaboration with African Union Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR), organized a national training workshop in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from July 20-22. FINAL COMMUNIQUE

The sixth VET-GOV Programme Steering Committee (PSC) Meeting was held at the SOFITEL Mauritius Imperial Resort in Port Louis, Mauritius, on 22nd and 23rd July 2015. It was attended by the Steering Committee Members and other participants from AU-IBAR, OIE, FAO, EISMV, EAFF, Midzi agricultural Development Services Pty Ltd, BRENTEC VACCINES, RECs (COMESA, EAC, ECCAS, IGAD and SADC) and representatives from countries such as Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius,  and Zambia, (List of participants: Annex 1):

The meeting was officially opened by Honourable Mahen Kumar Seeruttun, Minister of Agro Industry and Food Security, Republic of Mauritius, following remarks from Dr. Janet Edeme, Head of Rural Economy Division on behalf of the Commissioner of DREA, Dr. Baboucarr Jaw, representing the Director AU-IBAR, Mr. David Mwangi Njuru, representing the EC; Prof. Cheikh Ly representing the FAO and Dr. Karim Tounkara representing the OIE.

ICPALD/IGAD and AUIBAR jointly organized steering committees’ meeting on  Improving Animal Disease Surveillance in Support of Livestock Trade (STSD project ) on June 26, 2015 in Addis Ababa to review the project progress including technical and financial reports, work plans and budgets and provide guidance to strengthen coordination and information sharing with complementary interventions in the region.

Naivasha, Kenya; June 12-13, 2015 - ICPALD/IGAD and AUIBAR jointly organized the above regional meeting with the main objectives of creating further awareness to the relevant Ministries and Stakeholders on the RAHPF, to share and discuss on the outputs and recommendations of the previous meeting on domestication of the framework and record further achievements and challenges, update on status of ongoing national and regional animal health related projects /program/initiatives and to develop a road map and identify strategies to effectively roll-out the RAHPF in member states.
