February 16, 2015, Djibouti: The Land Policy Initiative (LPI) was established in 2006 as a joint initiative of the AU Commission, the UNECA and the AfDB with a view to facilitating national land policy development processes within the context of the AU Framework and Guidelines on Land Policy in Africa which was endorsed by the 13th Assembly of the AU Heads of State and Government in Sirte, Libya in 2009.

Djibouti; The Republic of Djibouti

The three-year project “Support to mainstreaming land governance in the IGAD programmes” was jointly developed by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the Land Policy Initiative (LPI), with the support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). The project will enhance the capacity of the LPI and the IGAD Secretariat to facilitate and monitor the implementation in IGAD region of the AU Declaration on Land Issues and Challenges, and mainstream land governance issues in programmes and activities of the IGAD Secretariat. The project launch and related events comprise a series of activities to be conducted from 16 to 19 February 2015, in Djibouti, as follows:

  • Project launch and planning activities - 16 and 17 February 2015;
  • Project Steering Committee meeting - 18 February 2015; and
  • Inter-RECs meeting - 19 February 2015.

The events will bring together about 50 participants representing the African Union Commission, IGAD and its specialized institutions, IGAD Member States, various institutions partnering with IGAD and the LPI, civil society organization, and the media.

Addis Ababa, January 21, 2015: The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) held the first IGAD Meeting of the Ministers of Water Resources on 21 January 2015 at Sheraton Hotel in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The objective of the meeting was to deliberate on common challenges and opportunities in the region to sustainably manage the water resources in support of socio-economic development, peace building, and regional integration in the region. The Ministers received the report of the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) which preceded the ministerial meeting on 20 January 2015.

Kampala, January 15, 2015: IGAD Inland Water Resources Management Programme (INWRMP) and the School of Law of Makerere University (Kampala, Uganda) today closed a three-day workshop on International Water Law meant for IGAD Member States officials active in water management within concerned ministries in their home countries.

Dr Emmanuel Kasimbazi, Course Coordinator and Chair of the Environmental Law Centre/School of Law/Makerere University, presided over the handing over of certificates ceremony in the premises of the School of Law this morning. On day one of the training where a brief opening ceremony was held, Dr Kasimbazi, on behalf of the Dean of the School of Law, Dr Damalie Naggita Musoke, had expressed her pleasure to have IGAD as a partner to facilitate the training course which was aimed “at providing officials from IGAD member states with exposure to topics of international water law relevant within IGAD regional context, so as to enhance their capacity to handle water resources management issues and negotiate solutions”.

Nairobi, 8 December 2014 – The IGAD Inland Water Resources Management Program has convened the 1st Water Dialogue Forum and Expo at the Kenyatta International Conference Center (KICC) in Nairobi, Kenya. The three-day event that commenced this morning, was officially opened by the Cabinet secretary of Environment, Water and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kenya, Prof. Judy Wakhungu who also launched the Expo being held in the same premises.

Other dignitaries present included the IGAD Executive Secretary Ambassador Mahboub Maalim and Representative of the United Nations Mr. Mohamed Khalid. The dignitaries joined close to 500 delegates who represent the water sector in seven IGAD Member States.
